Labour’s Mark Latham is fighting the Council’s proposal to develop the rest of Moorgreen Hospital in West End.
Mark says “We have had huge support across the borough from people who want more healthcare at Eastleigh’s only remaining NHS site.”
But Liberal Democrat MP Mike Thornton has bet both ways on the development which is proposed by Eastleigh Borough Councillors. First Mr Thornton MP wrote to NHS England that Moorgreen was NOT “surplus to NHS requirements”; but then, as Councillor Thornton, he sat in the council meeting that voted for the plan to go forward!Since their Local Plan failed the Lib Dems are desperate to build on public land. We are facing more houses - we need Moorgreen for our future NHS.
Save Moorgreen Hospital for the NHS Support surges for Mark Latham’s campaign
In April last year a third of the Moorgreen site was given to the national Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) with planning for 115 homes, around the old workhouse - but no new access.
The leader of Eastleigh BC (Cllr Keith House) was appointed to the board of the HCA by a Conservative Minister in 2012. Cllr House and the HCA couldn’t interest a developer at the right price, so now plans to build on the whole hospital site, moving a few NHS facilities to the field near the M27 have been drawn up by Eastleigh BC’s overstretched Planning Dept. The HCA want more NHS land released for housing and, despite being our Borough’s leader, that is what Cllr House is doing.
Health Services and Homes
These plans are wrong; we will lose the whole of Eastleigh’s last NHS hospital site to housing when we need more clinics and services in Eastleigh (such as ante-natal, 0-5 development and older persons services) to avoid long journeys to Southampton General - which has huge problems with parking. Future services will not fit on a small field with little parking and with no provision for growing health service needs, despite Eastleigh facing up to 17,000 new homes.
The Council’s Local Plan was rejected in December (see Local Plan on EBC website); and now local councillors are desperate to find sites for housing, but they won’t say this; in fact in the latest ‘Hedge End Standpoint’ a councillor wrote on Moorgreen “Your local Lib Dem team have campaigned to see more local health facilities, …make sure land at the hospital site was protected so it could not all be sold off [for] housing”!
Eastleigh Borough Council’s Brief
Who is behind this? The Council will try to blame the NHS, the HCA or others but the plans were rushed through the full council (of 90% Lib Dem councillors, including Cllr Mike Thornton, our MP) who approved their Brief.
Mark Latham has met with West Hants Clinical Commissioning Group, consulted the Moorgreen Stakeholders Group (of NHS service providers) he founded in 2014, and community groups. The petition we launched in January has over 500 signatures at time of writing and EBC now seem to have delayed the next stage until AFTER the General Election. We will carry on fighting so they cannot sneak through these plans.
Eastleigh needs a Community Hospital to serve the huge growth in population we are facing. Our Council should support this NOT be planning to prevent it.
